Hop to it
August 22, 2019
It is said that hops (Humulus lupulus) has been in cultivation since the 1st century, having been the flavor ingredient in German ales. The vine spread throughout Europe and was even considered a "wicked and pernicious weed" in England. It made it's way to America in the 1600's with the majority of cultivation in Oregon and Washington today. Although its papery flowers are sought after by breweries, the plant is an excellent ornamental vine that produces a lush growth that can literally cover a porch. I had a home where the vine went up and over the front porch and down the side of the house about 25 feet! The best part....when the vine dies back in the fall you just cut it down to the ground. It will start all over again the next year when red shoots emerge in the very early spring. Another plus....it's deer resistant! So what are you waiting for? Hop to it!
